It is time to visit the glorious Croatian region situated in middle of the Adriatic coast – the Šibenik region.
Šibenik, the coastal centre of the region, has one of the most beautiful and preserved old city cores in Dalmatia.
Standing in front of the UNESCO protected St. James’s cathedral will leave you breathless. In a way, you will feel protected as the city core, surrounded by its fortresses.
Numerous narrow streets, small stores hidden amongst them will make you feel like a playful child again.
But Šibenik is more than just historical buildings and streets. It is a city of culture, a city of music surrounded by 220 peaceful islands and a mighty inland.
From mesmerising concerts under the stars in St. Michael’s fortress to the rich music programme during the Christmas season, Šibenik will not bore you. Due to an effort made by a group of young, proactive individuals, Šibenik is now a vibrant city.
Its region – full of natural beauty, historical sightings, appealing bays and tasteful food.
Let’s take a look at the Šibenik region and find out why you should own a property in Šibenik!
Tranquil islands, stunning national parks and great gastronomy
If there is one characteristic that differentiates the islands of Šibenik archipelago from the other islands in the Adriatic, it is tranquillity.
You will find small islands, islands without cars, with walking trails (Prvić, Kaprije) and numerous hidden picturesque bays and stunning beaches.
Zlarin is perhaps the most famous island in the Šibenik archipelago and nearest to the city of Sibenik. It is known for 3 things: Croatian poet Vesna Parun, being a plastic free island and corals. Croatian Coral Centre has recently been opened in Zlarin, honouring the centuries long tradition of the coral cultivation on that island.
If fishing is your sport, you should not miss Žirje. It is the most remote inhabited island and a great fishing location.
Grand natural wealth can also be found on the mainland of the Šibenik region.
With its seven waterfalls and abundance of greenery, Krka National Park is a true natural wonder. It is a paradise for hikers and cyclists as well as other nature enthusiasts. On the other hand, divers and boaters will find their piece of heaven in Kornati National Park.
One of the most renowned Croatian restaurants is situated in Šibenik
Šibenik and its region have many fine restaurants that serve exquisite Dalmatian (and worldly) cuisine. However, if you are looking for something truly special, one restaurant stands out.
Pelegrini is a rustic restaurant situated in the heart of Šibenik’s Old Town, just across St. James’s cathedral. Its head chef is Rudolf Štefan, one of the most renowned Croatian chefs. He won Pelegrini its Michelin star and excellent reviews in Gault & Millau.
Pelegrini’s menu is based on a combination of region’s gastronomic heritage and contemporary cuisine that will dazzle your palate. The flavour is their king, they say, and the goal is a satisfied customer.
Beside the tasteful food made out of local ingredients, you will be able to enjoy superb Croatian wines.
Beaches in Šibenik region are beautiful and diverse
Whether you are a fan of sandy, pebble or cliffy beaches, you will find your match in this region.
Both the city and its surroundings offer wonderful beaches. You will find secluded beaches and beaches with convenient facilities and entertainment for the entire family.
The most famous beach in the city of Šibenik is a town beach called Banj. Banj proudly carries the Blue Flag label that indicates great sea quality. Another Blue Flag beach is the sandy beach in Amadria Park. That beach is perceived to be one of the most beautiful beaches in Croatia, if not the most beautiful one.
Jadria is Sibenik’s oldest and most special beach – it exists since 1921. and is on the list of Croatian cultural heritage.
City beaches can be a great everyday choice, but there is nothing like bathing in the crystal-clear island sea.
One such beach is located in Murter, an island situated only 35 kilometres from Šibenik that can be reached by car via bridge.
Slanica is a glorious, sandy beach with coffee shops and restaurants. It is surrounded by pine forests and has a walking trail by the sea. It can get crowded during the high season, so it is best to visit it in June or September.
Primošten is also just a 30 minutes ride away from Sibenik. There you will find another lovely beach called Velika Raduča. It is a modernly equipped beach that will delight all those who enjoy summer sports and pine shade.
Primošten is one of the most beloved counties in the region, and a great choice for real estate investment.
Šibenik has great weather and Mediterranean climate
As a city by the sea, in the central Dalmatia, Šibenik has Mediterranean climate. This means that the summers are hot, with very little rain while the winters are mild.
The forceful rulers of the coast, winds bura (colder, more purifying) and jugo (warmer, more humid) are present in the Sibenik region as well. Sometimes soft sea breeze maestral joins them.
The bathing season usually starts in June, when the sea temperatures surpass 20 Celsius degrees. Lately, with overall temperature increase, the bathing season lasts until the end of October.
The sea is very pleasant in this Dalmatian region. But, keep in mind that sometimes the sea in the Šibenik canal can be a bit more refreshing because of the surrounding river Krka.
